Biography


Richard Shinn, ISID

Richard Shinn holds a BS degree in Environmental Design and Planning from the School of Architecture at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. After graduation Shinn started his career with May Co. Department Stores in Store Planning.  Next he joined Federated Department Stores in the same capacity. 

In 1979 he became Vice President of Store Planning and Development for the Barker Brothers Furniture Store chain in Los Angeles. He was responsible for remodeling eleven existing furniture stores throughout the Los Angeles area and the design of two new stores, one in Laguna Hills, California and another in Bakersfield, California.  Additional responsibilities included attending furniture markets worldwide and assisting in coordinating buying of all home furnishings. He also supervised all Interior Design Studios in each store.

In 1985 Richard Shinn started his own business and became consultant to Wien Air Alaska (a Household International Company) in the design and planning of new living quarters at Prudhoe Bay, Alaska (the origin of the Alaska Pipeline).

Additional projects Richard Shinn managed for Wien included new terminal ticket counters throughout Alaska, VIP lounges, baggage handling areas and airplane interiors.

Other projects he has completed include travel agencies in the South Pacific, a resort hotel, medical office condominiums and Curtis and Campbell Paint and Wallpaper Showrooms.

Richard Shinn had designed over one hundred residences throughout the United States. Shinn’s work has been published in the Los Angeles Times Home Magazine, House Beautiful, House and Garden, Designer’s West, Waverly’s Easy to Do Decorating, Women’s Day Magazine, Furniture Today and Home Furnishings Daily.
